WHERE ARE WE
Buitsivango Farm is located on the outskirts of Ghanzi,
Botswana, Southern Africa. Ghanzi is located along the trans-Kalahari
highway. To get to Ghanzi, you travel:
- 675 km Northwest of Gaborone (tar)
- 280 km Southwest of Maun (dirt, tarred late 2000)
-1060km Northwest of Johannesburg (tar)
- 500 km East of Windhoek (tar)
There are regular air services between Gaborone and Ghanzi
BEST TIME TO GO
Botswana is an all year round wildlife destination. However
there are certain seasons for special interest groups to take note of:
Best birding months are Nov - March when the Delta is brimming with migratory
birds. Best botanical months are Dec - May when the vegetation is lush
and green, and also when most plants are in flower.
Different types of roots, melons, vegetables, berries, etc grow
at different times of the year. During the winter months (May -
October) the main roots and veldt food on offer are tubers, roots,
melons, moramas (nuts), and some others. Winter offers you the experience
of how the bushman survive through the dry months. Even this time
of year you will experience gathering food with the woman as well
as trying it of course.
June through to November is generally considered a good time for game
viewing and walking through the bush as it is not as thick, making
it is easier to spot wildlife (game)..... and the weather is not
as hot. Hopefully, at Buitsivango we will still have some standing
water in the river bed. We had water all year round in 2001, (first
time since 1974) this helps keep the existing wildlife on the farm
and encourages other types of wildlife that visit to stay. It's
nice to walk down to the river bed early morning and watch Kudo's
and hundreds of sand grouse and other birds coming to drink. You
could spend a whole day watching different species turning up to
drink. It's quite amazing.........
CHILDREN
Although we have had families who have very much enjoyed
their holidays with Kalahari Sunset Safaris, there are only very limited
facilities for children of any age. To take advantage of child reductions,
children must be aged 2 to 12 years at the date of return and share accommodation
with 2 full fare paying passengers.
WATER
Throughout Botswana at hotels, inns, lodges and other public
places, tap water is purified and safe to drink. This water is generally
high in nutrients and minerals so on your first couple of days it is worth
drinking bottled water as well as the local water to give your body a
chance to adjust. Please remember that water is a scarce resource, especially
in a drought-stricken area such as Botswana so please be respectful and
help us to conserve water.
CHARITY
Preimary school education is free but parents have to provide
pens, paper, books and even desks and chairs. If you wish to help in a
small way biros, notebooks, chalk etc are always welcomed and as they
are not bulky will not take up much room in a suitcase. Some of our clients
have generously brought outgrown and otherwise unwanted children's clothing,
shoes etc. It also means they have room in their suitcase to take home
those souvenirs. We recommend that you speak to Andrea who can advise
you on distribution.
Parts of the family group or Clan is already suffering,
alcoholism, lack of respect for individuals and elders. Learning to hold
a pen, draw and write can give the children enough confidence to attend
school and express their feelings.
The Bushman are a developing race and therefore welcome
help from charitable organisations, most of which direct their efforts
to the education and advancement of the young to provide a brighter future
for this declining population.
